They’re in Florida right?
Technically, they can be found in Florida… But they aren’t supposed to be there!
Lionfish are an introduced invasive species.
Aren’t lionfish Poisonous?
Lionfish are venomous, not poisonous!
The distinction is in the delivery: poisonous animals are toxic if ingested, venomous animals inject toxic via spines or fangs. Lionfish venom is injected with spines along the body, specifically the dorsal, pelvic, or anal spines.
So Are lionfish dangerous?
Lionfish use their spines defensively.
They don’t pose a danger unless threatened - in which case they will orient their spines in the direction of the threat. Their venom is potent, but not fatal. It WILL hurt (take if from me). If stung you should treat with hot water and seek medical attention immediately!
